Holly Caretta-Weyer, MD, MHPE

Dr. Holly Caretta-Weyer is Associate Dean for Admissions and Assessment at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Director of Assessment for its Department of Emergency Medicine, where she also chairs the Clinical Competency Committee and is a clinical associate professor. She earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (Alpha Omega Alpha, Honors in Research) and completed her emergency medicine residency there, serving as chief resident.
She went on to complete a medical education scholarship fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University and a Master of Health Professions Education at University of Illinois Chicago. She is also a PhD candidate at Maastricht University, studying residency selection in competency-based systems.
Dr. Caretta-Weyer is a national leader in competency-based medical education (CBME). She has contributed to the Association of American Medical Colleges Core EPA pilot, leads a $1.3M American Medical Association Reimagining Residency grant, and has held roles with the American Board of Medical Specialties and international CBME collaborators. She currently chairs the Emergency Medicine CBME Task Force and was named International Medical Educator of the Year by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2022.
Her research focuses on competency-based education, assessment, and learner transitions across the medical education continuum.
