Why UWEM? I chose UW-Madison after having a wonderful experience on my emergency medicine rotation as a visiting medical student. I adore the city of Madison and wanted to be in an area with easy access to nature and outdoor activities. Everyone made me feel welcome and supported while ensuring I had ample exposure to unique learning opportunities. I couldn’t imagine a better training environment!

Why UWEM? I chose UW–Madison because they had a clear interest in fostering the growth of their residents both in and out of the hospital. On top of that, everyone on my interview day was so easy to talk to that I felt at home right away!

Why UWEM? Everyone at UW is so supportive, happy, and down to earth. I remember leaving my interview day smiling. The faculty felt genuinely invested and enthusiastic about teaching and mentorship, and the 3+1 program structure allows me to explore my personal and professional interests. Also, Madison is a fun city with no shortage of activities or beauty!

Why UWEM? During my interview, I felt that UW would best support me out of all the programs I explored. I got along well with every person who interviewed me, and I had so much fun during my second look! Also, who doesn’t want to do a little flight medicine?!

Why UWEM? The program is incredibly supportive of its residents and has the educational opportunities I am looking for. There is a great culture here with awesome faculty, staff, and residents, which is very inviting for learners. There is also a strong sense of community, and it’s a place where I feel like I can thrive. Additionally, I get to continue being a lifelong Wisconsin Badger after having also attended UW–Madison for undergrad and my MD/MPH dual program. I’m also interested in continuing to work with the UW’s Native American Center for Health Professions.

Why UWEM? I am incredibly excited to join the UW EM team and train with the people who made me want to be an emergency medicine physician. I really enjoyed working with the UW residents and am excited to find mentorship and explore my interests including Med Flight, critical care, global health and more. I love the city of Madison and am thrilled to be close to my Wisconsin friends and family.


Lera O’Sullivan, MD, MSt

Personal Hobbies: I was a professional snowboarder in high school but my career ended when I broke my back (TP at L4, if you must know). I have a master’s degree in Slavonic Studies (basically 9th century Russian) from Oxford. I really like to go to movies by myself. I have a Portuguese Water Dog named Nelson and a rescue kitten named Maeby. My husband and I love to travel – I am a dual UK/US citizen, have lived in the UK and Russia, and have traveled to 42 countries.
Why UWEM? I chose this program because the collaborative, family vibes were obvious from the outset. I’m a big fan of a friendly work environment and was drawn to UW–Madison because everyone seems so happy and welcoming. Flight medicine is a big draw for me, so I was thrilled to find the helicopter hangar right on the roof! Also, as a lover of winter, when I visited Madison in January and found it to be 2 degrees fahrenheit, I knew I had found the place for me! I’ve been in Oregon for the last four years and miss all of my cold weather gear.

I’m also an avid aviation photographer (i.e., I take pictures of and from planes) – but my wife hates my photographs.
