Resident Coaching Program

The role of our coaches

Coaches serve as allies and advocates throughout residency, helping you reach your full potential. Their learner-centered approach is guided by your goals, interests, and preferences.

Each coach “family” — a coach and their residents — meets throughout the year for team-building, connection, and near-peer mentoring. All coach families also gather annually for a day of camaraderie and friendly competition.

How coaching supports residents

  • Actionable feedback: Your coach will help you interpret evaluations, identify key areas for growth, and create a realistic plan to achieve your goals. Regular check-ins provide ongoing feedback so you can track progress.
  • Personalized learning: Coaches work with you to recognize strengths, address gaps, and build a tailored learning plan across medical knowledge, clinical practice, communication, and leadership skills. They provide accountability, recommend adjustments, and help you set new goals as you advance.
  • Long-term support: Coaches develop strong, lasting relationships with residents and serve as advocates on their behalf. Your coach will also help connect you with mentors who align with your career goals.

“There is a strong sense of family and community at UW — everyone is so down-to-earth and happy. I absolutely love how they foster a growth mindset, creating an environment that will not only challenge me but support me while doing so.”
