Why I chose UW: Calvin Madsen, MD

Meet Calvin Madsen, MD (he/him), class of 2026.

Q: Hometown?
A: Topeka, Kansas

Q: What’s your educational background prior to residency?
A: I completed my bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Brigham Young University and obtained my MD from the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine.

Q: Why did you choose the University of Wisconsin emergency medicine residency program?
A: I chose UW-Madison for a variety of reasons. I absolutely loved my interview day and really felt like I would be joining a family if I matched here. I have a big interest in Med Flight, and getting the opportunity to fly as much as I want to was a huge draw. I knew I wanted to get back to the Midwest for residency, and the reputation, support from faculty, flight medicine opportunities, and proximity to the Green Bay Packers among so many other reasons made UW-Madison a no-brainer.

Q: What are some of your medical interests?
A: Wilderness Medicine, Med Flight, EMS and tactical medicine, ultrasound

Q: What activities keep you busy and grounded outside of work?
A: My biggest hobbies are reading and weightlifting, and I’m just starting to get into smoking meat on my new Traeger. I also love anything outdoors like camping, hiking, boating, shooting, etc. especially when it’s with my wife and 2-year-old son. I love sports and would spend just about every Saturday and Sunday in the fall watching football if I could.
