Why I chose UW: John Constantakis, DO

Meet John Constantakis, DO (he/him), class of 2026.

Q: Hometown?
A: Dearborn Heights, Michigan

Q: What’s your educational background prior to residency?
A: I completed my bachelor’s degree in zoology at Michigan State University and obtained my medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. I actually pivoted to Emergency Medicine during my Neurology residency here at UW. I consider my neuro experience as invaluable to my development as a physician. One of my biggest goals is bridging my experiences with neurology to those with emergency medicine to improve my ability to deliver patient-centered care, particularly in critically ill patients. I’m particularly interested in the inpatient and medical management of acute neurologic emergencies.

Q: Why did you choose the University of Wisconsin emergency medicine residency program?
A: I was looking for an academic program with a family/team atmosphere committed to excellent patient care and supporting my research interests.

Q: What are some of your medical interests?
A: Critical care, neurocritical care

Q: What job would you do if you weren’t a physician?
A: Evolutionary biologist

Q: What activities keep you busy and grounded outside of work?
A: I’m a licensed scuba diver and love spending time with my partner and our two adorable cats.
