Why I chose UW: Grace Carey, MD

Meet Grace Carey, MD (she/her), class of 2025 and chief resident.

Q: Hometown?
A: Shelburne, Vermont

Q: What’s your educational background prior to residency?
A: I completed my bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and movement science at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and obtained my MD from the University of Michigan Medical School.

Q: Why did you choose the University of Wisconsin emergency medicine residency program?
A: I knew that for residency I wanted to be at a large academic medical center that treats complex patients while allowing for ample opportunity to pursue other personal and professional interests. Not only does UW-Madison work to provide mentorship in multiple fields, but the 3+1 structure will allow me to develop additional interests along the way. On top of the incredible faculty and program, the city of Madison offers amazing food and activities in a beautiful setting! I can’t wait for what the next 3+ years bring.

Q: What are some of your medical interests?
A: Critical care, medical education/mentorship, simulation

Q: What job would you do if you weren’t a physician?
A: Chef!

Q: What activities keep you busy and grounded outside of work?
A: I love CrossFit, gymnastics, drawing, kayaking, skiing, collecting sneakers, and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

Q: What’s a fun fact people may not know about you?
A: I know how to put lobsters to sleep.
