Why I chose UW: Mitchell Butterbaugh, MD

Meet Mitch Butterbaugh, MD (he/him), class of 2026.

Q: Hometown?
A: Eden Prairie, Minnesota

Q: What’s your educational background prior to residency?
A: I completed my bachelor’s degree in physiology at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and obtained my MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Q: Why did you choose the University of Wisconsin emergency medicine residency program?
A: The people! UW stood out as the program with the most approachable, down to earth, and happy residents and faculty of all the programs I interviewed with. On top of that, all of the opportunities to continue my work in the prehospital setting with the EMS, Med Flight, and research programs that UW offers. It’s hard to betray my Gopher blood, but for residency I’m stoked to be a Badger!

Q: What are some of your medical interests?
A: EMS & Med Flight, education, community outreach, and legislative advocacy

Q: What job would you do if you weren’t a physician?
A: Hmmm…maybe a chef, carpenter, and/or secret agent.

Q: What activities keep you busy and grounded outside of work?
A: Music, golfing, sailing, horseback riding, coding, cooking, lifting
