Dr. William “Bill” Burns trained in emergency medicine at Northwestern University, where he served as chief resident, and completed a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine. He then joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where he practices in the emergency department and contributes to inpatient and consult palliative care services. He also helps coordinate resident block and clinical schedules.

His interests include resident education, ECG interpretation, communication, symptom management, and the intersection of emergency and palliative care. He co-developed the Foundations ECG curriculum, part of Foundations of Emergency Medicine, which is widely used across the U.S. and expanding internationally.

Outside of work, he enjoys time with his family, cycling, audiobooks, home projects, and bottle aging cocktails.
