Mary Westergaard, MD

After earning her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Westergaard completed her emergency medicine residency training at Denver Health Medical Center, where she also served as chief resident. Upon graduation, she moved back to Baltimore to join the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine where she cultivated an interest in resident and medical student education.
Dr. Westergaard then moved to Madison in order to join the rapidly expanding emergency medicine residency program at the University of Wisconsin. She served as Director of Medical Student Education and then Residency Program Director before being appointed Vice Chair of Education in 2018.
Dr. Westergaard’s professional interests include women in medicine and diversity, equity and inclusion. After serving nationally as Chair of the American Association of Women in Emergency Medicine, she founded and chaired the inaugural Group on Women in Medicine and Science at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Having led the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Task Force on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Dr. Westergaard served as founding co-chair for both the UW GME Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Subcommittee and the Department of Emergency Medicine Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. Additional active areas of interest for Dr. Westergaard include academic promotions and physician mentorship and coaching.

Aaron Kraut, MD

Dr. Aaron Kraut joined the Emergency Medicine faculty at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in 2015 after completing his residency training at Northwestern University, where he served as a chief resident and was inducted into the Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators. He graduated from Middlebury College with a B.A. in Biology and completed medical school at the University of Vermont Larner School of Medicine.
His professional interests include resident education, feedback, and curriculum development. He is actively involved in multi-institutional education scholarship and educational leadership development. Dr. Kraut enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and his two golden retrievers, Wallace and Biscuit.

Benjamin Schnapp, MD, MEd

Dr. Schnapp graduated from The Mount Sinai Hospital emergency medicine residency program in New York City, where he completed a specialty track in medical education and served as chief resident. He completed his medical education fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago and is currently completing his Masters in Education with a focus on the Health Professions at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Schnapp’s interests include clinical teaching skills, the resident as teacher, resident wellness, and decision making. He currently serves on the SAEM Graduate Medical Education and Fellowship Approval committees.
In his free time, he enjoys grilling in his backyard, sampling the delicious restaurants of Madison, traveling back to his home state of Maine, and spending time with his wife and children.

William Burns, MD

Fellowship: Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine - Chief Resident
Dr. Burns completed residency training in Chicago at the Northwestern University Emergency Medicine program. After serving as Chief Resident during his fourth year, he completed a fellowship in Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Upon completion of the fellowship, Dr. Burns joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and works both in the emergency department and on the palliative care service.
His professional interests include resident education, EKG interpretation, interpersonal communication, symptom management, and the intersection of emergency and palliative medicine. Along with a team of dedicated EM educators, Dr. Burns created the Foundations EKG curriculum for EM residents which has been implemented widely across the country.

Simanjit Mand, MD

Dr. Mand completed her medical degree at the University of Michigan. She then went on to complete her emergency medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati where she served as chief resident during her final year. She continued her training at the University of Cincinnati for her ultrasound fellowship. Aside from her interests in resident education, resident mentorship, and clinical ultrasound, she looks forward to continuing to explore ways to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the residency and department.
Outside of work, Dr. Mand loves traveling internationally and trying new cuisines, and her guilty pleasure is horrible reality TV shows.
